Search "dentist near me" or "best biryani in [your city]" and Google shows a map with three businesses — the local pack — above most other results. For local businesses, those three spots get a large share of calls, direction requests and website visits. Local SEO is the work of earning them.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO (local search engine optimisation) is improving your online presence so your business appears when people nearby search for what you offer. It covers your Google Business Profile, your website, your reviews and mentions of your business across the web.
How Google ranks local businesses
Google has said publicly that local rankings depend mainly on three factors:
- Relevance — how well your profile and website match the search.
- Distance — how far your business is from the searcher or the location in the search.
- Prominence — how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links, mentions and overall web presence.
You can't move your shop, but you can strongly influence relevance and prominence.

The local SEO checklist
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single most important step. Fill in everything: primary and secondary categories, services, products, hours, attributes, description, photos and a booking or website link. Our detailed guide to Google Business Profile optimisation walks through every field.
2. Make your NAP consistent
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. It should be identical on your website, Google profile, Facebook, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART and any other listings. Inconsistent details confuse Google and customers.
3. Build a steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and whether people choose you. Ask every satisfied customer, make it easy with a direct review link or QR code, and reply to every review — good or bad. See how to get more Google reviews.
4. Create locality pages on your website
If you serve several areas, create genuinely useful pages for each — not copies with the area name swapped. Mention landmarks, directions, area-specific services and testimonials from customers there.
5. Optimise your website for your city
- Include your city and main service in page titles and headings
- Add your full address and an embedded map on the contact page
- Add LocalBusiness structured data (schema)
- Make sure the site is fast and mobile-friendly
6. Earn local links and mentions
Local news sites, chambers of commerce, industry associations, suppliers, event sponsorships and community organisations are all good sources. A handful of relevant local links beats hundreds of low-quality ones.
7. Post and update regularly
Google Business Profile posts, fresh photos, answered questions and updated hours signal an active business.
How long does local SEO take?
Profile improvements can show results in a few weeks. Competitive categories in big cities usually take three to six months of consistent work. Read more in how long SEO takes.
Common local SEO mistakes
- Keyword-stuffing your business name on Google ("Best Dentist Vijayawada Cheap Clinic") — it can get your profile suspended
- Using a virtual office or fake address
- Buying fake reviews
- Ignoring negative reviews
- Choosing the wrong primary category
Local SEO for multiple cities
If you have branches, each location needs its own Google Business Profile, its own page on your website and its own reviews. If you serve customers in several cities without a physical office there, focus on city-specific website pages and content rather than fake addresses.
A 30-day local SEO action plan
If you want a practical starting schedule, follow this:
Week 1 — Profile and accuracy
- Verify and complete your Google Business Profile
- Fix your business name, address and phone on your website and top five directories
- Choose the right primary and secondary categories
Week 2 — Reviews and photos
- Create a direct review link and QR code
- Ask your last 20 happy customers for a review on WhatsApp
- Upload 15–20 real photos
Week 3 — Website
- Add your city and area to page titles and headings of key service pages
- Add an embedded map, full address and hours on the contact page
- Add LocalBusiness structured data
Week 4 — Content and links
- Publish one genuinely useful locality page or guide
- Contact two local associations or partners about a listing
- Publish your first Google Business Profile post
Then repeat the review, photo and post habits every week.
How to track local SEO progress
- Google Business Profile Performance: calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches that found you
- Search Console: impressions and clicks for queries containing your city or "near me"
- Rank checks from your area: search from your phone near your business and a few kilometres away
- Enquiries by source: ask every new customer how they found you
Service-area businesses
If you visit customers (plumbers, pest control, caterers, home tutors), you can hide your address and set service areas. Your website then does more of the work: build helpful pages for each area you serve, mention real jobs completed there, and collect reviews that mention the locations.
