On-page SEO is everything on the page itself that helps search engines and people understand it. Unlike links from other sites, it's entirely in your control. Use this checklist on every important page.
Search intent
1. Match the intent of the search
Before writing, search your target keyword and look at the top results. Are they guides, service pages, product lists or comparisons? Create the same type of page — but better.
2. Target one main topic per page
One page for "website design in Pune", another for "e-commerce website development". Pages that try to rank for everything rank for nothing.
Titles and descriptions
3. Write a unique title tag
Include the main keyword near the start, keep it around 50–60 characters, and make it compelling. Example: "Website Design in Pune — From ₹2,999 | Krish Digital".
4. Write a meta description that earns the click
About 140–160 characters summarising the page and giving a reason to click. It doesn't directly affect rankings but affects click-through rate.
5. Use a clean URL
Short, readable and descriptive: /services/website-development rather than /page?id=123.
We check rankings, site speed, your Google profile and top competitors — then send a clear action list.
Headings and content
6. One clear H1
One main heading that states what the page is about.
7. Logical H2 and H3 structure
Use headings to break up content into sections that answer related questions.
8. Answer the question early
Give the core answer in the first few paragraphs, then expand. Readers — and Google — reward pages that get to the point.
9. Cover the topic properly
Include the questions people ask about the topic, practical details, examples and next steps. Look at "People also ask" for ideas.
10. Write for people first
Use the keyword naturally where it fits. Repeating it unnaturally (keyword stuffing) hurts readability and can hurt rankings.
11. Show expertise and trust
Add real examples, author or company details, dates updated, prices or ranges, and evidence for claims. Google's quality guidelines emphasise experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust.
Links
12. Add internal links
Link to related pages on your site with descriptive anchor text — "our local SEO service", not "click here". This spreads authority and helps people navigate.
13. Link out where it helps
Cite official or authoritative sources when useful.
14. Fix broken links
Broken links waste crawl effort and frustrate visitors.
Media
15. Optimise images
Compress images, use modern formats like WebP, set width and height to prevent layout shift, and write descriptive alt text.
16. Use video where it explains better
A short explainer or walkthrough can improve engagement and conversion.
Technical page elements
17. Add structured data
Use schema markup relevant to the page — LocalBusiness, Service, Product, FAQ, Article, BreadcrumbList.
18. Set the canonical tag
Point duplicate or similar pages to the main version.
19. Make it fast and mobile-friendly
Check Core Web Vitals and test on a real phone. See our Core Web Vitals guide.
20. Give every page a clear call to action
SEO brings visitors; the page still has to convert them. Make the next step obvious.
A quick before-and-after example
Before
- Title: "Services | ABC Company"
- H1: "Welcome to our website"
- Content: 120 words listing services
- No location, prices, FAQs or call to action
After
- Title: "Website Design in Guntur — From ₹2,999 | ABC Company"
- H1: "Website design in Guntur for shops, clinics and startups"
- Content: who it's for, what's included, three packages with prices, examples of work, a five-question FAQ, and WhatsApp and call buttons
- Internal links to related services and two case studies
- Service and FAQ structured data added
The second version answers the searcher's questions, which is exactly what ranking pages tend to do.
How to prioritise when you have many pages
- Start with pages that already get impressions in Search Console but rank on page two
- Then fix your most important service pages
- Then improve high-traffic blog posts that should lead to services
- Leave low-value pages (old news, thin tag pages) for last — or remove or merge them
Tools that help
- Google Search Console — queries, pages and indexing issues
- PageSpeed Insights — performance and Core Web Vitals
- Rich Results Test — structured data validation
- A crawler — to find missing titles, duplicate descriptions and broken links across the site

Frequently asked questions
On-page SEO is optimising elements on the page itself — content, title tags, headings, internal links, images, structured data and page experience — so search engines and people understand and value it.
Around 50–60 characters is a good guide so it displays fully in most search results. Put the main keyword near the start.
Not directly, but a compelling description improves click-through rate, which helps you get more traffic from the rankings you have.
