"How much does Google Ads cost?" is one of the most common questions business owners ask — and the honest answer is "as much as you decide". Google Ads runs on an auction, so you control your budget. What you can't fully control is the cost of each click. This guide explains both.

How Google Ads pricing works

You pay when someone clicks your ad (cost per click, or CPC). The price of that click is set by an auction every time someone searches. Three things decide what you pay and where you appear:

  1. Your bid — the maximum you're willing to pay for a click.
  2. Quality Score — Google's rating of your expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Higher quality means lower prices.
  3. Competition — how many other advertisers want the same searches at the same time.

A well-built campaign with relevant ads and a good landing page regularly pays less than a competitor bidding more.

Typical cost per click in India

Costs vary by city, season and competition, but these are typical 2026 ranges for search campaigns:

  • Local services (salons, repairs, tuition, restaurants): often ₹5–₹30 per click
  • Healthcare and clinics: often ₹15–₹80 per click; specialties like IVF or cosmetic surgery can cost more
  • Education and coaching admissions: often ₹15–₹60 per click, rising in admission season
  • Real estate: often ₹20–₹100+ per click in major cities
  • Legal, finance, insurance and B2B software: often ₹50–₹300+ per click

Metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru usually cost more than tier-2 cities like Vijayawada, Guntur or Coimbatore for the same keyword.

From cost per click to cost per lead

Clicks are not customers. What matters is cost per lead (CPL):

Cost per lead = Cost per click ÷ Conversion rate of your landing page

If you pay ₹30 per click and 1 in 10 visitors enquires (a 10% conversion rate), each lead costs ₹300. Double the conversion rate to 20% and the same clicks give you leads at ₹150. This is why landing pages matter as much as bids.

How much budget should you start with?

For most local businesses in India, a sensible test budget is ₹500–₹2,000 per day for 30–60 days. That is enough for the campaign to gather data and for you to see which keywords produce real enquiries. Very competitive categories may need more to get meaningful volume.

Google may spend up to twice your daily budget on some days, but it balances out — you won't be charged more than your daily budget multiplied by the average days in a month.

Agency and management fees

If someone manages your campaigns, expect either:

  • A fixed monthly fee — commonly ₹5,000–₹25,000 for small and mid-sized accounts
  • A percentage of ad spend — commonly 10–20% for larger budgets

Your ad budget is paid directly to Google. Always make sure the Google Ads account is in your business's name.

8 ways to lower your cost per lead

  1. Use exact and phrase match keywords for your main services instead of broad keywords.
  2. Add negative keywords weekly — "free", "jobs", "course", "salary", "DIY" and anything irrelevant. See our negative keywords list.
  3. Target only the areas you serve — a radius around your business or specific pin codes.
  4. Schedule ads for the hours you can answer the phone.
  5. Send traffic to a dedicated landing page, not your homepage.
  6. Use call and WhatsApp assets so mobile users can contact you in one tap.
  7. Track conversions properly — calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks — so Google optimises for leads, not clicks. Our conversion tracking guide shows how.
  8. Improve Quality Score by tightening ad groups so each ad matches its keywords closely.

Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?

If people actively search for what you sell, yes — it is one of the fastest ways to get enquiries. It works less well for products nobody searches for yet; there, social ads usually do better.

A worked budget example

Imagine a dental clinic in Vijayawada wants more implant and root-canal patients.

  • Average cost per click for its keywords: around ₹35
  • Landing page conversion rate: 8% (8 of every 100 visitors call, WhatsApp or fill the form)
  • Cost per lead: ₹35 ÷ 0.08 = about ₹440
  • The front desk converts 1 in 3 leads into a booked treatment
  • Cost per new patient: about ₹1,320

If an implant case is worth tens of thousands of rupees, that is a strong return. If the clinic improves its landing page to a 12% conversion rate, the cost per patient falls to around ₹880 — without paying Google a rupee more per click.

This is the calculation every business should run before deciding whether Google Ads is "expensive".

Why costs rise (and what to do)

  • Seasonality: admissions, wedding season and festival periods bring more advertisers. Plan budgets and creatives in advance.
  • New competitors: if a well-funded competitor enters, focus on long-tail keywords and stronger offers rather than a bidding war.
  • Broad match drift: if search terms become irrelevant, tighten match types and add negatives.
  • Falling Quality Score: refresh ads and improve landing pages. See Quality Score explained.

How to judge results in the first 30 days

Week one is mostly data gathering. By week four, you should know:

  1. Which keywords produce enquiries and which only spend
  2. Your average cost per lead
  3. Which hours and days convert best
  4. Which ads have the highest click-through rate

If you can answer these, the campaign is on track — even if it isn't profitable yet. If you can't, tracking is probably broken.

Frequently asked questions

There is no official minimum. Many local businesses start with ₹500–₹2,000 per day for 30–60 days to gather enough data to judge results.

It depends on the industry and city. Local services often pay ₹5–₹30 per click, while legal, finance and B2B keywords can cost ₹50–₹300 or more.

For standard search campaigns you pay only when someone clicks. Some campaign types, like certain display or video formats, can charge per view or impression.
