Facebook and Instagram ads are run through the same platform — Meta Ads Manager — and priced the same way. There's no fixed rate card: you set a budget and Meta's auction decides what you pay. Here's how to think about the cost.

How Meta ads are priced

Meta charges most campaigns per 1,000 impressions (CPM), even when you optimise for clicks or leads. Your effective cost depends on:

  • Audience — narrower and more competitive audiences cost more
  • Objective — leads and sales often cost more per impression than reach
  • Creative quality — engaging ads get cheaper delivery
  • Season — festival periods like Diwali and big sale days raise prices
  • Placement — Reels, Feed, Stories and Audience Network price differently

Typical costs in India

Ranges vary widely, but for local businesses in 2026 these are common:

  • CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions): often ₹50–₹250
  • Cost per link click: often ₹2–₹20
  • Cost per lead (instant form): often ₹50–₹400 for local services, higher for real estate, education and high-ticket services
  • Cost per WhatsApp conversation (click-to-WhatsApp ads): often comparable to or lower than form leads, with better lead quality for many businesses

Your results can be outside these ranges — creative and offer quality make the biggest difference.

How much budget should you start with?

For a local business, ₹300–₹1,000 per day per campaign for at least two to three weeks is a reasonable test. Meta needs data to find the right people; changing campaigns every day keeps them stuck in the "learning phase".

What drives cost per lead down

  1. Strong creative: show the product, result or person in the first second. Reels-style vertical video usually performs best.
  2. A clear offer: "Free consultation", "₹2,999 package", "Book a trial class" beats "We are the best".
  3. The right objective: use Leads or Engagement (messages) objectives, not Traffic, if you want enquiries.
  4. Broad-enough audiences: let Meta's targeting work — over-narrow interests often raise costs. See Meta ads targeting for local businesses.
  5. Fewer form fields: every extra question reduces leads; use one qualifying question at most.
  6. Fast follow-up: call or WhatsApp new leads within minutes. Lead quality complaints are often follow-up problems.
  7. Fresh creatives: refresh ads every two to four weeks as performance fades.

Boost vs Ads Manager

The Boost button is convenient but limited. Ads Manager gives you proper objectives, placements, A/B testing and reporting — use it for anything beyond occasional reach.

Management fees

Agencies typically charge a fixed monthly fee or a percentage of ad spend. Your ad budget should be billed to your own Meta ad account, in your business's name.

Meta ads vs Google Ads

Google captures people already searching; Meta creates demand among people who match your audience. Many businesses use both. Read SEO vs Google Ads for how search channels compare.

A worked example: a coaching centre

A coaching centre in Guntur runs lead form ads for a new batch:

  • Daily budget: ₹800 for 21 days (₹16,800 total)
  • Cost per lead: around ₹220 → roughly 76 leads
  • Contacted within 30 minutes: 70 leads
  • Counselling sessions booked: 24
  • Admissions: 9

Cost per admission ≈ ₹1,870. If a course fee is many times that, the campaign works — even though "₹220 per lead" sounded expensive at first.

The same centre then tested click-to-WhatsApp ads. Leads cost slightly more, but more parents booked counselling sessions because questions were answered in the chat. This is why you judge Meta ads by cost per customer, not cost per lead.

Creative formats that usually perform

  • Vertical video (9:16) for Reels and Stories — the most important format today
  • Square (1:1) video or images for Feed
  • Carousels for comparing packages or showing several products
  • Customer testimonial videos for trust-heavy purchases

Prepare at least three different creatives per campaign so Meta can find the best performer.

Budget mistakes to avoid

  • Splitting ₹500 a day across five ad sets — each gets too little data
  • Turning ads off on weekends when they might perform best for your audience
  • Increasing the budget by large jumps; grow it gradually (for example, 20–30% every few days) on winning ad sets
  • Ignoring frequency — if the same people see your ad too often, results drop; refresh creatives

Frequently asked questions

Meta allows very small daily budgets, but ₹300–₹1,000 per day per campaign for two to three weeks is a more realistic test for local businesses.

They're bought through the same system. Costs depend on audience and placement — sometimes Instagram Reels deliver cheaper results, sometimes Facebook Feed does. Let Meta optimise placements unless you have a reason not to.

Common causes are vague offers, no qualifying question in the form, the wrong objective, and slow follow-up. Calling within minutes makes a big difference.
