A website is still the one piece of online real estate your business fully owns. Social media accounts can be restricted, marketplaces change their rules, but your website and domain stay yours. Here is how to build one properly — whether you do it yourself or hire someone.
Step 1: Decide what the website must do
Before design, decide the website's job. For most small businesses it is one of these:
- Generate enquiries — calls, WhatsApp messages, form submissions
- Take bookings — appointments, tables, classes
- Sell online — products with cart and payments
- Build trust — so people who hear about you can check you out
Write it down. Every page and button should serve that job.
Step 2: Choose and register a domain
Your domain is your web address. Tips:
- Prefer .com or .in; both are trusted in India.
- Keep it short, easy to spell and easy to say on a phone call.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers if you can.
- Register it in your own name and email, never only in a developer's account.
A .in or .com domain usually costs a few hundred to around a thousand rupees per year. Our domain and hosting guide covers this in detail.

Step 3: Pick how you'll build it
You have three realistic options:
- Website builder (Wix, Shopify, Squarespace): quick, monthly fee, limited flexibility.
- WordPress: flexible and widely supported, needs hosting and maintenance.
- A developer or agency: done for you, from simple fixed-price packages to fully custom builds.
Not sure which? See WordPress vs Shopify vs a custom website.
Step 4: Plan your pages
Most small businesses need five to ten pages:
- Home — what you do, who for, where, and the main call to action
- Services or products — ideally one page per main service (great for SEO)
- About — your story, team and why customers trust you
- Gallery or work — real photos of your premises, products or results
- Reviews — genuine customer feedback
- Contact — phone, WhatsApp, map, hours and a short form
- FAQ — answers to the questions you hear every day
Step 5: Write content that sells
Good website copy is clear, not clever:
- Lead with the customer's problem and your solution.
- Mention your city and areas served — it helps local SEO.
- Show prices or price ranges where you can; it builds trust and filters enquiries.
- Use short paragraphs and headings people can scan on a phone.
- Add a clear next step on every page: "Call now", "WhatsApp us", "Book a visit".
Step 6: Design for mobile first
Most visitors in India will see your site on a phone. Check that:
- Text is readable without zooming
- Buttons are large enough to tap
- Pages load in under three seconds on mobile data
- Call and WhatsApp buttons are visible without scrolling far
Step 7: Cover the SEO basics
You don't need to be an expert to get the basics right:
- A unique page title and meta description for every page
- One clear heading (H1) per page that includes the main service and city
- Descriptive image file names and alt text
- A sitemap submitted in Google Search Console
- Link your Google Business Profile to the website
Step 8: Your launch checklist
- Forms send to the right email and WhatsApp number
- All links and buttons work on mobile
- HTTPS (the padlock) is active
- Google Analytics and Search Console are connected
- The favicon, logo and contact details are correct everywhere
- You have admin access and the domain is in your name
What does it cost?
A simple, professional business website can start from ₹2,999 with a fixed-price package. Custom-designed sites typically cost ₹15,000–₹60,000, and e-commerce more. Our article on affordable website design explains what each budget includes.
What to write on your homepage (a simple formula)
Many owners get stuck on the homepage. Use this order:
- Headline: what you do, for whom, where — "Dental care for families in Patamata, Vijayawada"
- Sub-headline: your main benefit or proof — "Same-day appointments · 4.8★ from 300+ Google reviews"
- Primary button: "Book on WhatsApp" or "Call now"
- Three to six services with one-line descriptions and links
- Why choose us: three or four specific reasons, not generic claims
- Proof: reviews, photos, results, certifications
- How it works: three steps from enquiry to delivery
- FAQ
- Final call to action with address and hours
Images: what to shoot
Real photos outperform stock images. Before your website goes live, take:
- The front of your premises (helps people find you)
- Interiors, clean and well lit
- Your team, individually and together
- Products or work samples
- A few photos of you working with customers (with permission)
A modern phone in daylight is enough. Avoid heavy filters.
Pages that quietly build trust
- Privacy policy and terms — essential if you collect any personal data
- Refund or cancellation policy — for products and bookings
- Clear business details — registered name, address and contact
These matter more than most owners expect, especially for first-time customers and anyone paying online.
After launch: the first 30 days
- Share the website link on WhatsApp Status, Instagram bio and Google Business Profile
- Ask a few customers to try booking and tell you what was confusing
- Check Google Search Console for indexing errors
- Look at which pages get visits and improve the weakest service page first
A website is never finished — but a simple, clear version that launches this month is worth more than a perfect one that launches next year.
