Amazon India has become one of the most important sales channels for D2C brands, manufacturers and retailers. But listing products is the easy part. Getting them seen — and bought — takes a mix of search optimisation, advertising and conversion work.
This guide explains how Amazon marketing works and what to expect from an Amazon marketing agency.
How shoppers find products on Amazon
Most Amazon purchases start with a search inside Amazon. Amazon's ranking algorithm decides which products appear first, and it heavily favours products that:
- Are relevant to the search (title, bullet points, backend keywords)
- Convert well (shoppers who see the product buy it)
- Sell consistently (sales velocity and stock availability)
- Have strong reviews and ratings
Amazon marketing is about improving all four.
1. Listing SEO: be relevant for the right searches
A well-optimised listing includes:
- Title: brand, product type, key feature, size or quantity — readable, not keyword-stuffed
- Bullet points: benefits first, then specifications; answer the questions buyers ask
- Backend search terms: synonyms, regional terms and common misspellings that do not fit the visible copy
- Images: a clean main image plus infographics, lifestyle shots, size charts and comparison images
- Category and attributes: filled in completely so you appear in filtered searches
Keyword research for Amazon is different from Google. It focuses on the exact phrases shoppers use inside the marketplace and on what top-ranking competitors are targeting.

2. A+ Content and Brand Store
Registered brands can add A+ Content — rich images, comparison charts and brand stories below the listing. Good A+ Content answers objections and typically improves conversion. A Brand Store gives you a branded mini-website inside Amazon that you can send ad and social traffic to.
3. Amazon Ads: the three main formats
Sponsored Products
Ads for individual products in search results and on product pages. This is where most sellers start, and usually where most budget goes.
Sponsored Brands
Banner-style ads at the top of search results with your logo, a headline and several products — or a video. Good for brand visibility and launching new ranges.
Sponsored Display
Retargeting and audience-based ads shown on and off Amazon — useful for bringing back shoppers who viewed your products without buying.
ACoS vs TACoS: the numbers that matter
- ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sale) = ad spend ÷ ad-attributed sales. It shows how efficient your ads are.
- TACoS (Total ACoS) = ad spend ÷ total sales (ads + organic). It shows whether ads are growing your overall business.
A healthy pattern over time: TACoS stays stable or falls while total sales rise — meaning ads are helping you rank and sell organically too. Your target ACoS depends on your margins; a product with 50% margin can afford a far higher ACoS than one with 15%.
4. Reviews and ratings
Reviews strongly influence both ranking and conversion. Use Amazon's legitimate tools — such as the Request a Review button and Amazon's official review programmes where your brand is eligible — and fix the product or packaging issues behind negative reviews. Never buy or incentivise reviews; it violates Amazon's policies and can get your account suspended.
5. Inventory and pricing
Running out of stock can undo months of ranking progress. Good Amazon management includes stock forecasting, especially before sale events like the Great Indian Festival, and competitive pricing checks.
What an Amazon marketing agency should do
A good agency should:
- Audit your listings, ads and account health before quoting
- Rewrite and redesign listings using real keyword data
- Structure ad campaigns by product and goal (research, ranking, profitability)
- Manage bids and negative keywords regularly
- Report weekly on sales, ACoS, TACoS and organic rank movement
- Work inside your Seller Central account — you keep full ownership
Be wary of agencies that guarantee sales numbers, ask for your login password instead of user permissions, or suggest buying reviews.
Flipkart, Meesho and other marketplaces
The same principles — relevance, conversion, velocity and reviews — apply on Flipkart and Meesho too, though their ad tools differ. Many Indian sellers grow fastest by winning on one marketplace first, then expanding.

Frequently asked questions
Typically listing SEO (titles, bullets, backend keywords), product images and A+ Content, Sponsored Products, Brands and Display ads management, review strategy and performance reporting.
It depends on your margins. A good target ACoS is below your profit margin before ad spend. Track TACoS too, to see whether ads are growing total sales.
Yes, and it should. Add the agency as a user in Seller Central and Amazon Ads with the right permissions so you keep full ownership and control.
